I understand that they don't want loaded weapons on the firing line while shooters are going down range, BUT and here's the rub; if it's concealed how is it that you know they're possibly carrying.  They're (the weapons) not on the firing line and/or being drawn from concealment.

Regarding the drawing and firing I think we understand that one having watching what has sometimes taken place at the cowboy shoots.  Liability for when somebody draws, sweeps and/or shoots with someone not being clear of this action.

Believe that the release that you sign and other "rules" cover their behinds regarding liability if it is a weapon that is not drawn in and around the range.

They're just trying to cover their collective behinds and frankly on this one I can't blame them.  How many times have you packed your gear and left when confronted with unsafe gun handling?  I know I have.  (Not at Bristol)

Bottom line.

No drawing and firng - Okay

No concealed carry on the range - Don't agree (but guess I can disarm and rearm when leaving)

But then I don't make the rules and ain't on the board.

DD, The Stoughton Conservation Club put the same no Concealed Carry rule in place when Wisconsin got our CCW law.. I don't like it either, but I can understand the CYA aspect of it. When the law was passed, a large number of non-gun people, including <spoiler alert - thumb-sucking, "progressive", socialist, pro-Obama libtards may wish to stop reading my post at this point, lest they become offended> were expected to rush out and buy their first $895 hand-gun ($495 at Dam Road Gun Shop) and a mail-order $20 holster and start packing after practicing drawing in front of the bedroom mirror for 10 minutes (muttering "do ya feel lucky, punk?" or "Go ahead, make my day!" after each draw) and rush over to the shooting range the next day. I see enough negligent gun handling during the week of the deer rifle sight-in clinic at Stoughton each year to appreciate the potential dangers of allowing those "Johnny-(sorry, Popper)-come-latelys" trying to whip out their concealed double-stack 9mms (which button is the safety again?) and empty the magazine in the general direction of down-range</spoiler alert - last minute 2008 "OMG they elected him" preppers may resume reading>.

Then too, a lot of conservation club members may be avid long gun or bow hunters, but have no interest in or liking of handguns. The clubs have to balance the interests of all members, not just those who are more pro-handgun.

A more reasonable policy would be to allow concealed carry on the range, but not allow firing of the concealed weapon except under conditions as permitted by the concealed carry law. Most of readers here probably have more trouble deciding which gun to carry rather than deciding whether to carry their only gun concealed or put it in a case and take it to the range to shoot. But a common sense rule like that would probably anger a lot one gun licensees and make them feel discriminated against (and inadequate).

Anyone care to report on the concealed carry rules of any Illinois shooting clubs or ranges?

Snidely Whiplash

I am proud to report that the esteemed Board of Directors of the Good Guys Posse and the landowner of our range discussed this issue over a year ago and concluded that "concealed means concealed".

I don't know about any other places, but the On Target range in Crystal Lake is posted with the GREEN sign, welcoming CCW, only asking that it says concealed unless need arises. They do offer certain times for drawing and shooting, provided the person has qualified at one of their classes. But any licensed CCW can carry.

Old news. The date says August 2011, the guys on Ill Carry don't like Bristol and they dig this up periodically. That really hate the one round rule. I can see both sides but as they say " it is what it is!"

Think about it do you want to go down range to post targets with some knucklehead on the line with
a loaded weapon?? Oh and he decides to show it off to his buddy while people are down range!!
Just because they have a CCW that doesn't make them Bright.
Leave your Weapon in your car you can still wear your Holster.
Is that so hard to figure out?

I think the down range thing is huge here. I know when I'm working the rifle range I feel better knowing when I'm in front of the firing line there are no loaded firearms behind me. Sometimes it's bad enough behind the firing line with some of the people that use the range. Last year I got swept with a loaded mini 14. You never know when the "public" is involved.
