Bristol is having an informal (no coats, no slings, any sight) 22 competition for 4 weeks of Feb. Can anyone tell me what would be the best ammo and where to get it. This fall I needed to gear up a 22 for some shooting as well. I purchased six different brands and shot them with many of them reacting differently in the gun. I ended up with that gun liking the winchester 40gr match ammo the best. I'm sure that I could find some high end stuff at $10..00 a box that would shoot better but until they give away better prizes than "Thanks for coming" I will stick with what works. But the point is, try a few different brands to see what works for your gun and then have fun. <img src='http://www.goodguysposse.org/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/gunfighter.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':gunfighter:' />

I often shoot the slower match ammo at the 300 yard match at Oco. and it groups pretty well, athough lower. But slower ammo seems to be more wind sensitive. Lapua match ammo is good for my rifle but RS 100 is better (and a little faster).<br />

I've carried it a bit further; I had my .22 barrel "cyro frozen" to improve accuracy; especially for longer ranges (it helps with cleaning also) and I use a .22 headspace gauge: after I have found the type of ammo my rifle likes I feed each round into this gauge and find the differences in the headspacing and place the ammo in like groups; therefore each round is seated the same and the groups grow small on account of the ammo being more uniform. I know, I know, that's getting a bit anal but at the Masters, you needed every edge you could get. And you know what? Ugly

I don't have a stock 10/22; mine is all set up for Chevy/Truck Challenge type of competition; heavy barrel, all the guts removed and replaced and a custom stock with a pretty good scope on it too. With the heavy barrel, the cryro freezing really showed a difference at the longer distances. Up close, once its zeroed in at 60 yds. you shoot once and then just aim at the previous bullet hole.
